Lightning Summer Hockey is Back!
We’re excited to get back on the ice this summer for a fun, fast-paced hockey environment focused on what kids love most: playing hockey!
The goal of the program is simple: keep players moving, competing, creating, and having fun all summer long.
Whether your player attends every week or just a few sessions between camps and vacations, we want this to be a flexible and positive summer hockey experience for everyone.
What To Expect Each Week
• Quick skating & puck touch warm-up to start each session
• Organized scrimmage play for the remainder of the skate
• Music playing throughout the session
• Fast pace, lots of puck touches, and minimal stoppages
Game Format
• Sessions will primarily run as 4 on 4
• 5 on 5 may be used depending on attendance numbers each week
• Maximum 15 skaters per side
• Players will be divided into two teams each session
• Please bring both a light and dark jersey every week
**We’ll also do our best to loosely organize shifts and matchups so players have opportunities to compete against similar level players throughout the skate.**
Fast-Paced Summer Hockey
To help maximize ice time and keep the energy high:
• Shifts will run approximately 90 seconds
• Changes will happen on the fly
• Minimal whistles and stoppages
• Focus on creativity, confidence, pace, and fun
**This isn’t meant to feel like a structured practice or tryout environment. It’s summer hockey and we want the kids smiling, competing, and enjoying the game.**
Volunteer Support Needed!
To help make the sessions run smoothly for the kids, we’ll need a few volunteers each week. All Volunteers must be OWHA/COLGHA registered and approved.
2 On-Ice Helpers
• Run warm-up
• Help manage gameplay
• Keep pucks moving and pace high
4 Bench Volunteers (2 per team)
• Help split teams during warm-up
• Organize lines and player rotations
• Manage bench doors
• Help keep changes moving smoothly
Lead Organizer (1 bench volunteer each week)
• Help balance teams and lines
• Coordinate with on-ice helpers
• Keep the overall session organized and flowing
1 Timekeeper / Music Volunteer
• Run the 90-second shift buzzer
• Play music during the skate
• Help maintain overall pace and energy
These sessions will only work well if we have great parent support, so thank you in advance to everyone willing to jump in and help out throughout the summer!
